Salim Pichan

Salim Pichan is a distinguished biodiversity conservationist and para-taxonomist who has been actively engaged in ecological and social development initiatives since 1995. With a lifelong focus on the floristic diversity of the Western Ghats, he has made notable contributions to the scientific community despite limited formal education.

He has played a key role in the discovery and scientific documentation of 32 plant species new to science from the Southern Western Ghats and has introduced 22 additional plant species, significantly contributing to the field of taxonomy. His work also includes the rediscovery of several rare, endemic, and medicinal plant species across diverse ecological zones.

Salim’s independent research has resulted in numerous publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and reports. In recognition of his contributions, two plant species—Seidenfadeniella salimii and Impatiens salimii—have been named in his honor.

He is a recipient of multiple awards, including the prestigious National Plant Genome Saviour Award, presented by Droupadi Murmu, acknowledging his contributions to biodiversity conservation and grassroots science.

Beyond research, he maintains a rich collection of plant genetic diversity, conserves hundreds of species in his homestead, and actively mentors students, farmers, and researchers. He has also contributed to biodiversity assessments in ecologically sensitive regions in collaboration with the Kerala Forest Department.

Currently, he serves as a Senior Technical Assistant at the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in Wayanad, continuing his work at the intersection of conservation, research, and community engagement.
